Jaylen’s immediate post-graduation goal is the same as thousands of other students: find a job. Ideally, he wants to be able to use his writing to “give a voice to people who have had theirs taken from them.”

In addiction to contributing articles to the online publications Nerdypoc and The Odyssey Online,  Jaylen also practices Jeet Kune Do, a type of martial arts founded by Bruce Lee. He describes himself as the type of person “who always tries to find the silver lining in every shadowy cloud.”

Staff Question: Explain why you believe that immigration is an important issue in our communities that needs to be confronted by our elected officials.

Immigration is an important issue because immigrants, now perhaps more than ever, are mistreated and misrepresented in our society.

“After 9/11, people irrationally feared immigrants. This led to an increase in violence against immigrants, particularly Muslims. Compassion is necessary when dealing with this issue. Many immigrants who come to this country are simply looking for a better life. People need to understand that before they let their prejudices cloud their judgement.”
